Lance had tried to let his mind rest, tried to settle the whirlwind of scenarios and possibilities constructing themselves in his thoughts about what exactly he and Leah were doing in Travelers Rest—and most importantly, the idea of just how big a role Leah was playing, both now and potentially going forward with their life together.

He had lain on the couch with his eyes closed and the makeshift ice pack, which had eventually become nothing but a soaked-through dish towel, melting on his knee. The pain had subsided to a dull throb, only flashing with knife-slice bursts whenever he attempted to move his knee. He had wanted to stay awake until Leah returned home from dinner, to make sure she was okay and to learn if she had discovered anything helpful—but mostly to make sure she was okay. But the excursion through the snow to the pond had exhausted him, drained his energy in more ways than one, and despite his frantic thoughts, he had found himself drifting away to sleep less than an hour after Leah had left.

The pain in his knee had awakened him, and he had sat up groggily, wincing as he’d lowered his feet to the floor. He’d shaken out four ibuprofen and then limped to the kitchen, where he’d deposited the dishtowel in the sink and cupped a handful of water to his mouth to swallow the pills. After switching off all the downstairs lights except for the Christmas tree, he’d taken one look out the front window by the door, had seen nothing but softly falling snow and an empty spot where the Beetle should be.

She’s fine, he’d told himself as he’d slipped his flip phone from his pocket and checked the time. It’s not that late yet. It had taken the entire time of him hobbling up the stairs with his swollen knee to convince himself that he hadn’t told himself a lie.

In the bedroom, he’d stripped out of his clothes, wincing as he’d bent his knee to pull off his shorts and socks, and then climbed into bed, letting the exhaustion take hold and pull him down.

She’s fine.

It was hard, pretending to be normal.
